TITLE: “SACRED NA-AI, THE WHITE BUFFALO”

DESCRIPTION: White buffalo are believed to be “good medicine” and are considered spiritual. The legend of the “white buffalo” is the most powerful story in the Lakota religion. Many versions exist, but the theme is the same, involving bravery, long-suffering, generosity, honesty and respect for all things in creation. Feathers adorned with red leather and beads were often offered in ceremonies and rituals honoring the white buffalo spirit. This design is a special tribute to the recent births of “white buffalo.”

TITLE: “THE STORYTELLER”

DESCRIPTION: Until recently many pueblos did not have a written language, so the legends of the people were passed from generation to generation by telling stories. The clay storyteller figures are made with great care seated with their mouth open and eyes closed. In this design the storyteller is telling 3 stories of the past. Turtle represents the legend of how people came to earth, Kokopelli represents the story of the humpback flute player and coyote represents the story of how the stars were put in the night sky.

TITLE: "HEART OF THE DRAGONFLY"

DESCRIPTION: Indians living in the Southwest before the Spanish arrived used a decorative symbol that had two crossbars and an extended vertical line forming a cross. This symbol represented the dragonfly who brought rains of summer. Many of these crosses had a heart at the bottom. It is believed that this heart represented the compassion the dragonfly had for the People.

    These drum ornaments are fun and easy to make. They are two-sided, stitched and laced. On the front side is the design as shown and on the back is a verse depicting the design's spirit. The finished drum is 3 inches in diameter. Each kit makes 2 drums and everything you need to complete the ornaments is included. Stitched on 18 ct. Aida by Zweigart.
